Potato growing in Tajikistan has expanded at a remarkable pace since independence in 1991. Official numbers put the 2025 crop at about 1.3 million tonnes, while in 1991 the country harvested little more than 100,000 tonnes from under 13,000 hectares. Land under potatoes is now about five times larger, and people eat close to four times more per head. FAO series show the same curve, with output above one million tonnes since 2020. The weak link is planting material: many growers still use table potatoes as seed, and the ministry is building a seed centre with FAO help. A cooperative in the north reports 80 to 90 tonnes per hectare, far above the national norm near 20. For seed exporters and Central Asian traders, this is clearly a market with room to grow. Yield figures differ between the ministry and FAO, so comparisons with neighbours need care.
Tajikistan produced 1.3 million tonnes of potatoes in 2025, the agriculture ministry said in August 2026, as reported by Sputnik Tajikistan. The ministry said this was 12.5 times more than in 1991. It put the average yield at 267.5 centners per hectare, or 26.75 tonnes.
The news agency Asia-Plus gave more detail in June 2025. In 1991 potatoes covered 12,800 hectares and production was 118,000 tonnes. In 2024 the area was 64,500 hectares and production was 1.264 million tonnes. Consumption rose from 32.3 to 120 kilograms per person a year over the same period.
Long-run trend
FAOSTAT data published by Our World in Data confirm the scale of growth. Output was 167,000 tonnes in 1992, 303,000 tonnes in 2000 and 760,000 tonnes in 2010. It passed one million tonnes in 2020 and reached 1.26 million tonnes in 2024. The FAOSTAT yield rose from 11.9 tonnes per hectare in 2000 to 20.0 tonnes in 2024.

Regions and seed
The northern Sughd region is one of the growing areas. Its Shahristan district harvested more than 72,000 tonnes in 2025 and plans more than 100,000 tonnes in 2026, the regional administration said in May. It added 300 hectares of new land this year, partly with water from new wells.
Seed is the main problem. According to Asia-Plus, many farmers plant table potatoes instead of certified seed. Imported seed helps only in the short term. Rights and royalties for elite varieties are also an obstacle. A seed potato innovation and technology centre is being set up with support from FAO and the ministry.
Some farms show what is possible. The cooperative Sarob, founded in 2011, reported yields of 80–90 tonnes per hectare, Asia-Plus wrote. The national average is about 20 tonnes.

Tajikistan now produces more potatoes than it needs for its own diet, measured by the national consumption norm. This creates room for sales to neighbouring markets in Central Asia.
For seed companies, the country is a clear opportunity. Most of the area is still planted with farm-saved seed. The new seed centre and the high yields of the best farms show that output can grow further without more land.
